We've been told there are so-called moderate Muslims who deplore terrorism and that Islam has been hijacked by extremists.

If there are in fact moderate Muslims, they have been quiet as mosque mice regarding their positions. For example, Americans don't know if moderate Muslims recognize Israel, what they think about women's rights, or if they believe the proposed New York City mosque should be moved to another location out of concern and sensitivity for the families of the victims of 9/11.

We also don't know if there are other freedom-loving and freedom-fighting Muslims who respect the rights of others to burn the Koran, draw cartoons of Mohammad in newspapers, hold marches to condemn Hamas and other terror organizations, write unflattering books about Islam, and vigorously support allowing people of other faiths to practice their faith in the city of Mecca where all other religions besides Islam are currently outlawed.

If there are Muslims who hold these moderate beliefs they are surely as rare as a Southern Baptist holding a Sunday morning church revival in Mecca.

Americans may not know much about Islam or its followers, but what we do know is that bloodthirsty terrorism is more often than not carried out by crazy-eyed, Muslim voodoo monsters screaming "God Is Great!" while slaughtering innocent people. The Obama Administration refuses to use the word "Islam" in describing these terrorists out of concern it will offend Muslims. I’m offended this is our nation’s policy.

The Center for Security Policy, known as Team B, recently released a report that should give all of us, especially the Obama Administration, reason to reverse course.

Composed of security experts from both previous Republican and Democratic Presidents, the report urges the Obama Administration to reverse course on not referring to Muslim terrorists as "Islamist" out of fear they will offend Muslims around the world.

The most bone-chilling finding by Team B is that America faces the threat of Islamic Sharia law slowing poisoning our legal system and ultimately destroying it. Sharia law is the Islam doctrine of Allah ruling over everything including legal, political and military doctrine. Sharia law is incompatible to free or thinking people.

What the Obama Administration and Muslims will not tell Americans is that the ultimate goal of Islam is to take over the world and replace representative, constitutional governments with Sharia law. Under Sharia law, freedom as we know it would be put to the Islamic sword.

What the free world faces is an insidious, violent movement that respects nothing but their own revolutionary ideology: world domination. This threat is not unlike communism which President Reagan vocally denounced at every opportunity.

Sharia law should be banned in the United States and those Muslims and imams in America who advocate Sharia law should be charged with sedition. Trying to overthrow our constitutional government through peaceful or violent means should never be tolerated.

I support reaching out to moderate Muslims as Team B advocates. We need them to drive a wedge between the whacked out, voodoo Muslims and those who want to exist peacefully with others of different faiths. However, where are these moderate Muslims and what do they believe? Do they actually exist?

Sharia law will only be allowed to poison our legal system and culture if we allow it. We should stand steadfast against it, outlaw it and make it known throughout the world that America stands with freedom and that we will not compromise it away out of fear of upsetting Muslims or a false belief that we can co-exist with a religious revolution whose goal is to destroy America.

We know the Obama Administration will ignore the advice of the Team B. The question is, what does the GOP or the Tea Party think of the report and what will they do with it?

Allegations that the White House offered Joe Sestak a job in exchange for dropping out of the Pennsylvania Senate race echo an earlier report of a job offer to candidate Andrew Romanoff in Colorado.

On Sept. 27, 2009, the Denver Post reported that the Obama administration offered Senate candidate Romanoff a position if he canceled plans to run for the Democratic nomination against incumbent Sen. Michael Bennet.

The paper said the job offer, which specified particular jobs, reportedly was delivered by Jim Messina, Obama’s deputy chief of staff. One position the Post cited was a job at USAID, the foreign aid agency.

Messina contacted Romanoff soon after news leaked in August 2009 that Romanoff, former Colorado House speaker, would make a primary run against Bennet.

Romanoff turned down the offer and announced his candidacy. Obama then endorsed Bennet, who had been appointed in January 2009 to fill the seat vacated when Ken Salazar became secretary of the Interior.

But Romanoff trounced Bennet at last weekend's Colorado Democratic assembly, winning the top line on the August primary ballot.

The White House denied that Romanoff had been offered a job.

“Mr. Romanoff was never offered a position within the administration,” said White House spokesman Adam Abrams.

Nevertheless, the Denver Post disclosures may have worked against Bennet.

“People in Colorado have an adverse reaction to the external forces coming down and telling them how to think,” said Colorado state Rep. Kathleen Curry, a Romanoff supporter.

And the Post observed: “The timing of Messina’s latest intervention sparked particular concern — because of the appearance that the administration was trying to buy off a nettlesome opponent, to some; to others, because the timing made the effort appear so ham-handed.”

Earlier in 2009, Colorado Democrats recommended Romanoff for a position in the administration, spokesman Abrams acknowledged. But he said that, although “there were some initial conversations, no job was ever offered.”

Observers are taking a fresh look at the Romanoff story amid ongoing controversy over Rep. Sestak’s claim that he was offered a position in the Obama administration in exchange for dropping his primary challenge to Sen. Arlen Specter.

Sestak said the offer came in July 2009, a month before he announced his candidacy.

Fellow Democrat Dick Durbin of Illinois, the Senate majority whip, has called on Sestak to say more about the job offer.

Republicans, meanwhile, are pressuring the White House to divulge details about the offer. Rep. Darrell Issa of California, the ranking Republican on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, has gone so far as to suggest a criminal probe in the matter.

Issa issued a statement saying: “For months, a United States congressman has stated that the White House offered him a job in exchange for not running in an election. We call this a bribe.

“Despite being asked numerous times, the White House has not refuted Congressman Sestak's allegations, but refuses to disclose who offered what and when. So this administration, that pledged to be a beacon of transparency and change, continues to conceal from the American people the truth about what exactly was said and offered.

“Until we get direct answers, this White House doesn't have a leg to stand on when they talk about openness and change.”

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Pensions for top U.S. executive rose by an average of 19 percent last year, and more than 200 officers saw their retirement savings surge by as much as 50 percent, even as their companies stock prices fell, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

Pensions rose as a result of generous formulas and some little-scrutinized techniques, such as changes in age or interest rates used in calculations, the paper said, citing an analysis of filings from 340 Standard & Poor's 500 companies.

And with the public outraged over lavish pay and big bonuses, the Journal on its website said pensions rose even as stock prices dropped by an average of 37 percent last year. Yet supplemental executive retirement plans, or SERPs, are mostly overlooked.

The chief executive of Merck & Co (MRK.N) saw his pension benefit rise by nearly $10 million to $21.7 million last year. Certain incentive payments for ConocoPhillips (COP.N) CEO Jim Mulva boosted bis pension by $9.5 million to $68.2 million, the paper said.

The top executives at General Electric (GE.N) saw the amounts they were due from pensions rise by 13 percent to $140.7 million, the Journal said.

WASHINGTON -- President Obama says he has no plans to ask the Justice Department to end its criminal investigation into the harsh interrogations of suspected terrorists during the Bush administration.

Seven former CIA directors have asked the president to do just that. In a letter to Obama on Friday, they warned that the probe could discourage CIA officers from doing the kind of aggressive intelligence work needed to fight terrorism.

Obama tells CBS' "Face the Nation" that he appreciates that the former CIA chiefs are wanting "to look after an institution that they helped to build."

Obama says he wants to make sure that he's not somehow overruling the decisions of prosecutors such as Attorney General Eric Holder who are there to uphold the law.

Sworn testimony by ArmorGroup executive challenged

WASHINGTON – Attorneys for a whistleblower suing the contractor hired to protect the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan say a top company executive was aware since July 2008 of alleged illegal and immoral conduct by guards.

The claim made Friday contradicts the sworn testimony of Samuel Brinkley, a vice president for Wackenhut Services, the owner of ArmorGroup North America. Brinkley told the Commission on Wartime Contracting that he and other corporate officials didn't know until late August of problems that reportedly included lurid parties and ArmorGroup employees frequenting brothels in Kabul.

But in a letter to the commission, the attorneys say their client, James Gordon, told Brinkley during a meeting in July 2008 of alleged guard misconduct. Brinkley did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility has begun an official inquiry into the dismissal in May of a civil complaint against the New Black Panther Party and two of its members who disrupted a Philadelphia polling place during the November general elections, the Washington Times reported.

The inquiry is disclosed in an Aug. 28 letter to Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the ranking Republican on the House Judiciary Committee who first raised questions about the dismissal in May and asked unsuccessfully that Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. make available the head of the department's Voting Section of the Civil Rights Division for a closed-door briefing on the decision.

In the letter, Mary Patrice Brown, acting OPR counsel, told the veteran congressman from Texas that the office had "initiated an inquiry into the matter" and that it would "contact you with the results of our inquiry once it is completed." A copy of the letter was obtained by The Washington Times.

"I am pleased that someone at the Justice Department is finally taking the dismissal of the New Black Panther Party case seriously," Smith said Wednesday. "The Justice Department's decision to drop a case against political allies who allegedly intimidated voters on Election Day 2008 reeks of political interference."

Smith said the department's refusal to provide Congress with an explanation for the dismissal "only further raises concerns that political favoritism played a role in this case."

ACORN Turns in Florida Workers on Voter Fraud Charges

Arrest warrants have been issued in Miami for 11 people suspected of falsifying information on hundreds of voter registration cards -- including registering the name of late actor Paul Newman -- the Florida State Attorney's office told FOXNews.com.

The FBI and state authorities took six people into custody Wednesday as it issued 11 arrest warrants for voter registration fraud in Homestead, Fla., in June 2008.

"Names were filled out on the registration forms that were not actual voters," said Ed Griffith, a spokesperson for the State Attorney's office. Griffith said the names included people who were already registered voters, fictitious names, and the name of the late actor Paul Newman, who died in Sept. 2008.

Griffith said the workers being sought were hired to register voters by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN. He said ACORN alerted the state attorney's office after it reviewed hundreds of fraudulent voter registration cards.

In a statement sent to FOXNews.com. on Wednesday, Florida ACORN board member Leroy Bell said, "we want to commend the State Attorney for taking decisive action. Today's action demonstrates the seriousness we brought to the task of not only expanding the electorate, but also of protecting the integrity of the voting process. "

"Over the last five years thousands of dedicated people have worked or volunteered with Florida ACORN and succeeded in helping hundreds of thousands of Florida citizens -- especially African-Americans, Latinos, low-income and young people -- to apply to become registered voters. Fortunately, our quality control managers and the systems we developed ensured their ability to spot the isolated wrongdoing by these 11 workers who tried to pass off phony forms instead of doing their work," he said.

Bell added that the government should do more to modernize the voter registration system, saying ACORN would "prefer that Florida and the United States adopt a more modern voter registration system where getting everyone on the rolls is the government's job and mission."

ACORN's activities were frequently questioned during the 2008 presidential election. The group, which claims to be a non-partisan grassroots community organization of low- and moderate-income people, came under fire in 2007 when Washington State filed felony charges against several paid ACORN employees and supervisors for more than 1,700 fraudulent voter registrations. In March 2008, an ACORN worker in Pennsylvania was sentenced for making 29 phony voter registration forms.

Well, goodbye to all that — thanks, at least in part, to the fallout from a horrifying drunk-driving tragedy that has garnered national attention.

On July 26, Diane Schuler, a 36-year-old mother of two, plowed her minivan into oncoming traffic after driving the wrong way on New York's Taconic State Parkway for almost two miles, killing herself, her 2-year-old daughter, three young nieces and three men in another car. Her 5-year-old son survived. Police said last week that shortly before the crash, which occurred on a Sunday afternoon as Schuler was driving the kids back from a weekend of camping, she had smoked pot and imbibed more than 10 drinks' worth of vodka. CHICAGO (Reuters) – An outbreak of salmonellosis in Colorado prompted the recall of 825,769 lbs of ground beef by a California beef company, the U.S. Agriculture Department said on Thursday.

Beef Packers Inc of Fresno, California, is recalling the beef, which was produced from June 5 to 23 and has the establishment number "EST. 31913." The beef may be linked to the Colorado illnesses, USDA said.

The ground beef was shipped to retail distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado, and Utah.

Because the meat may have been repackaged and sold under different names, consumers are being advised to check with stores to determine if they bought the recalled meat.

BOSTON – Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. has sent flowers and a note to the woman who unwittingly sparked a national debate on race by calling police to report what she thought might be a break-in at Gates' home.

Wendy Murphy, the lawyer for Lucia Whalen, called the flowers a "gesture of gratitude." She declined to say what was in the accompanying note.

Whalen's 911 call drew police to Gates' Cambridge home on July 16. The subsequent confrontation between Gates, who is black, and Sgt. James Crowley, who is white, ended in Gates' arrest for disorderly conduct, a charge that was later dropped.

Whalen found herself vilified by critics who accused her of racial profiling. The subsequent release of the 911 tapes showed she never described Gates or his driver as black.

DANA POINT, Calif. – A Southern California resort where American International Group Inc. sponsored a luxury retreat after receiving federal bailout money has been seized by Citigroup.

The owners of the St. Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point were in default on a $70 million loan from a real estate unit of Citigroup Inc., resulting in the takeover.

Citigroup said last month it would sell the property at a foreclosure auction. However, when no bidders came forward, the bank and the owners agreed to let Citigroup take ownership without that formal step.

The 400-room hotel will continue to operate as a St. Regis. It became a symbol of corporate excess last year when AIG spent some $440,000 on a posh retreat for its executives.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama welcomed the U.S. Senate health committee's approval of a proposal on Wednesday to overhaul healthcare, saying it would ensure fair treatment for patients by insurance companies.

"(The committee) has produced a proposal that will finally lower health care costs, provide better care for patients, and ensure fair treatment of consumers by the insurance industry," Obama said in a statement.

"No longer will insurance companies be able to deny coverage based on a pre-existing medical condition. No longer will Americans have to worry about their health insurance if they lose their job, change their job, or open a new business," he said.

Healthcare reform has many more hurdles to clear. The Senate panel is the first of five congressional committees to complete work on its version of a major overhaul for the industry, which comprises one-sixth of the U.S. economy. The legislation must be passed by the Senate and reconciled with a House of Representatives proposal before it goes to the White House.

Obama, for whom healthcare is a signature policy issue, plans to give a statement Wednesday from the White House about the progress that has been made so far.

Southwest checks planes after hole forces landing

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Southwest Airlines ordered inspections of nearly 200 aircraft after a football-sized hole opened up in the passenger cabin of a plane during flight, forcing an emergency landing in West Virginia.

Travelers on the 737 aircraft could see outside through the 1-foot-by-1-foot hole that appeared during the flight Monday. The cabin lost pressure, but no one was injured on the Nashville to Baltimore flight with 126 passengers and five crew members on board.

Passenger Brian Cunningham told NBC's "Today" show Tuesday that he had dozed off in his seat in midcabin when he was awakened by "the loudest roar I'd ever heard."

He said the hole was above his seat. People stayed calm and put on the oxygen masks that dropped from the ceiling.

"After we landed in Charleston, the pilot came out and looked up through the hole, and everybody applauded, shook his hand, a couple of people gave him hugs," Cunningham said.

It's not clear what caused the damage.

"I'd say it's not routine," Southwest Airlines Co. spokeswoman Marilee McInnis said in describing what happened.

McInnis said the company was inspecting all of its 737-300s as a precaution. She said service Tuesday shouldn't be affected. The 137-seater makes up about a third of the carrier's fleet of 544 jets.

He expressed concern about killings of labor leaders in Colombia and about human rights in general there. But Obama also said that Uribe is committed to the rule of law.

Calif regulators find pot smoke causes cancer

SAN FRANCISCO – Marijuana smoke has joined tobacco smoke and hundreds of other chemicals on a list of substances California regulators say cause cancer.

The ruling Friday by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment likely will force pot shops with 10 or more employees to post warnings. Final guidelines are expected by the time warning requirements take effect in a year.

The listing only applies to marijuana smoke, not the plant itself.

Spokesman Sam Delson says the state agency found marijuana smoke contains 33 of the same harmful chemicals as tobacco smoke.

Delson says the findings came from a review of more than 30 scientific papers.

California's Proposition 65 requires businesses to warn consumers of chemicals that cause cancer or reproductive harm.

Bob Bogle of rock band The Ventures dies

TACOMA, Wash. – Bob Bogle, lead guitarist and co-founder of the rock band The Ventures, known for 1960s instrumental hits like "Walk, Don't Run," has died at age 75.

Don Wilson, the band's other co-founder, tells The News Tribune of Tacoma, Wash., that Bogle became ill over the weekend and died Sunday.

The band sold millions of albums and heavily influenced other rock guitarists. It was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

Among its other hits were "Perfidia" and the theme from "Hawaii Five-O."

The band got its start in 1958 in Tacoma. Bogle played lead and bass and Wilson played rhythm guitar. They were soon joined by Nokie Edwards, another guitarist, and drummer Howie Johnson, later replaced by Mel Taylor.

WASHINGTON -- The IRS is weighing a proposal to deem one-quarter of employees' use of work cell phones as personal use and therefore subject to tax as a fringe benefit.

The proposal is one of several options the IRS put forward this week on the tax treatment of employer-provided cell phones. Current law already requires that the value of those cell phone services be included in a worker's gross income, unless the employee keeps detailed records showing that the cell phone is used for work only -- an idea cell phone trade groups are objecting to.

"The idea that you should keep a log saying, 'I made a call saying I will be late for dinner again,' that's a totally cumbersome and burdensome requirement that most employers and employees are not going to comply with," said Jot Carpenter, vice president of government affairs for CTIA-The Wireless Association.

The IRS, in a Monday notice, proposed options intended to simplify the requirement for employers. One proposal is a "safe harbor" that would deem 75 percent of work cell phone usage to be for work, and 25 percent to be personal. Under that scenario, employer deductions would be limited accordingly and employees would be taxed on the value of the personal use.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is calling for Congress to pay for new increases to federal benefit programs such as health care by raising taxes or coming up with budget cuts — a "pay-as-you-go" system that would have the force of law.

Obama will announce his proposal at an East Room event on Tuesday. The White House released details in advance.

The "PAYGO" plan would also require future tax cuts to be financed by tax increases elsewhere in the code, though exceptions are made for extending President George W. Bush's 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, as well as other tax cuts that are scheduled to expire.

The House and Senate already have their own PAYGO rules, but have routinely found ways around them. For example, a bill to effectively double GI Bill education benefits was enacted last year because of a loophole in congressional rules.

The goal is to avoid increasing a deficit that is already soaring to unimagined levels. Under the proposal, if new spending or tax reductions are not offset, there would be automatic cuts in so-called mandatory programs, though Social Security payments and some other programs would be exempt.

Obama's call for binding legislation comes as a reward to moderate-to-conservative "Blue Dog" Democrats who are big believers in PAYGO. Their votes were crucial to passing a congressional budget blueprint that generally follows Obama's budget.

But Tuesday's plan is a watered-down version of PAYGO proposed just last month in a little-noticed portion of Obama's budget plan. That prior version would have required, on average, all legislation subject to PAYGO to be paid for in the very first year. Tuesday's plan only requires PAYGO legislation to be financed over the coming decade. That mirrors congressional rules and reflects the likelihood that health care reform will add to the deficit in the early years.

Boy, 12, Killed by Lightning on Baseball Field

A 12-year-old Virginia boy is dead after he and his friend were struck by lightning while playing catch on a baseball field Wednesday night, MyFOXDC.com reported.

The Little League umpire called the game around 6:30 p.m. and ordered everyone off the field in Fredericksburg, Va., because of dark clouds, rain, hail and lightning.

But, Chelal Gross-Matos and his unidentified 11-year-old friend lingered on the field playing catch, the station reported.

"Their parents were close by. Their children were being supervised by their parents and they were just kind of playing catch with one another when they were struck," said First Sergeant Liz Scott, a spokeswoman with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Department.

The lightning seemed to strike Gross-Matos first, singing his hair and burning him all over before jumping to his friend, MyFOXDC.com reported. Both kids were knocked unconscious.

"People were yelling, two boys were struck by lightning!" Richard Atchley, a witness, told the station. "I saw one of the boys laying here, his eyes were rolled back. You could see the whites of his eye."

5 killed when car hits van in Arkansas

BAY, Ark – Police says five people were killed and five more were hurt when a car traveling in the wrong lane collided with a van carrying handicapped people.

Officers at the scene say the drivers of both vehicles were killed in the accident about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday. Two passengers in the van also died.

State police said later that a third van passenger taken by helicopter to a hospital at Memphis, Tenn., about 50 miles southeast, died, bringing the death toll to five.

Authorities say the van involved was owned by Focus Inc., which provides services for developmentally disabled adults.

The accident occurred when the driver of the car was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. 63 between Bay and Jonesboro, about 5 miles southeast of Jonesboro.

CLOVIS, N.M. – A 7-year-old girl survived a crash that killed her father and drove the family's damaged vehicle to get help, police said.

State police Capt. Jimmy Glascock says 40-year-old Guillermo Montes of Bovina, Texas, was thrown out of the vehicle Saturday night when it went off a highway and rolled over, coming to rest in a field in Curry County.

Glascock says little Elizabeth Kazza realized her father was dead and drove for about three miles until a passing motorist spotted her.

"(It took) a lot of courage. ... It's remarkable anybody could drive after something like that," Glascock said.

Authorities found Montes dead at the scene. The girl and her 4-year-old brother were treated for minor injuries.

State police said Wednesday that Elizabeth told officers her dad was driving to Clovis, about 25 miles from Bovina, to get beer when they crashed.

They said alcohol was believed to be a factor in the crash. Glascock said beer bottles were found at the scene, and that Elizabeth and her younger brother said Montes was drinking as he drove.

Rocks Dropped on Cars in 'Bizarre Stripping Game'

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — Troopers have arrested a man and a woman accused of damaging at least 14 vehicles, including a State Patrol car, by throwing rocks onto them from a railroad trestle over Interstate 5 near Lakewood, Wash., as a part of a bizarre stripping game.

Trooper Guy Gill says 23-year-old Joshua N. Sizemore and 18-year-old Amanda L. Madison were tossing baseball-sized rocks from the trestle early Monday. Sizemore, of Tacoma, and Madison, of Lakewood, were booked into the Pierce County Jail in Tacoma, Wash., for investigation of malicious mischief and second-degree assault.

Troopers on the ground were assisted by a State Patrol airplane that captured video of two people throwing rocks from the trestle. Investigators say Madison was in her underwear when the couple were arrested.

Investigators say the two were playing a stripping game.

One person was injured when a rock crashed through the window and bruised his arm. He did not need to be hospitalized.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama named federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor as the nation's First Hispanic Supreme Court justice on Tuesday, praising her as "an inspiring woman" with both the intellect and compassion to interpret the Constitution wisely.

Obama said Sotomayor has more experience as a judge than any current member of the high court had when nominated, adding she has earned the "respect of colleagues on the bench," the admiration of lawyers who appear in her court and "the adoration of her clerks."

"My heart today is bursting with gratitude," Sotomayor said from the White House podium moments after being introduced by Obama.

If confirmed by the Senate, she would join Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the second woman on the current court, the third in history. She would succeed retiring Justice David Souter.

Obama and Sotomayor both noted the historic nature of the appointment. The president said a Hispanic on the court would mark another step toward the goal of "equal justice under law."

Sotomayor, 54, said she grew up in poor surroundings and never dreamed she would one day be nominated for the highest court.

Obama has said he hopes she can take her place before the justices begin their new term in October.

Democrats hold a large majority in the Senate, and barring the unexpected, Sotomayor's confirmation should be assured.

The Senate Republican leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, issued a statement that said: "Senate Republicans will treat Judge Sotomayor fairly. We always shared a good laugh at that, but his point over the years was serious and wise: Good fortune doesn't make you God; so don't act like it.

I got to thinking of my dad yesterday while I was in Washington, reporting a day after California voters humbled their "Terminator" governor and terminated his budget initiatives.

At least a chastened Arnold said afterwards he heard them. I wondered whether Washington did, arrogantly piling on the very reckless spending so soundly rejected by angry voters in our largest state.

Not crazy voters. Not so-called silly "tea party" voters; nearly 7-out-of-10 voters who revolted against not only runaway spending but runaway conceit.

The conceit of leaders convinced they knew best, but didn't.

The conceit of legislators equally convinced we'd embrace their spending, but never deign the possibility we wouldn't.

The cocksure going off half-cocked — again.

That's what arrogant people do: They ignore other people. They dismiss other people. They laugh at other people. And in Washington, they continue undeterred spending the money of other people.

You see, arrogant people don't ask, don't tell, just spend. Clueless not only to tea parties they dismiss, but tea leaves they ignore.

I think my dad was right: Nothing stinks more than thinking you don't. Well Washington, you do. And Washington, you're stinking up the country thinking you don't. So take a whiff. Or I'm warning ya, take a hike.

My boss has a great line that I’ve often repeated and just love: We all live in our own heads.

But with respect to my boss, it just seems in Washington, their heads are lodged in a very dark place — no need to be graphic, but time to get real.

Because what else could explain a nation's capital that totally ignores the revolution unfolding in California’s capital? Where they're cutting spending like crazy after voters in that state went crazy and told them to stop spending, stop taxing, stop playing the same old games.

But looking around in Washington, nothing's stopped. Not the taxing, or the spending, or the ignoring, or the thinking, "We know better than our clueless subjects know."

So they merrily go on thinking in their heads that they're doing just fine. Clinging to election results from half a year ago. And insisting they've got a mandate — totally ignoring election results in California half a week ago and forgetting what they've got now is a manhole... and they're sinking into it.
It's one thing to be half-baked. But another to push spending that's proven half-ass.

But you wouldn't know that, would you, Washington? Your big head just doesn't fathom half-ass. No wonder. It's not that your head can't see it. The darn thing's just wedged too far up it.

If you penalize oil and gas, and add taxes, it is going to make it much more difficult and more expensive. That means U.S. jobs are exported and we won't get the revenues from royalties.

Oil executives fear the lesson of $5-a-gallon gasoline is lost, and that American consumers will pay the price, vulnerable to shortages in the short term and a continued dependence on foreign oil for decades to come.

ABOARD THE NOBLE PAUL ROMANO — Almost 140 miles off the Louisiana coast, aboard the drill ship Noble Paul Romano, workers punch an 8-inch steel pipe four miles under the ocean in search of America's next barrel of oil.

"If we don't increase our own oil production in the U.S., our dependence on foreign oil won't go down," said Marathon Oil executive Woody Pace.

The drill ship is the size of a football field. Twelve anchors the size of an average living room hold the rig in place while a synthetic-diamond cutting blade bores deep into sand and rock.

Like other oil explorers, Marathon is being forced farther and farther out into the Gulf to find oil. Deeper water means more expensive oil.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Postal Service has cut its staff by 25,000 this year as it struggles to reduce massive deficits, Postmaster General John Potter said Monday.

Postal employment is now below 635,000, Potter said, down from about 800,000 in 1999.

Thousands of carrier routes have also been eliminated as mail volume declines, he said.

"We have an infrastructure that, quite frankly, we cannot afford based on the income we're receiving," Potter said.

The agency still faces a potential $6.5 billion loss this year, Potter said, and even with increased borrowing and other changes it could finish the year with a $1.5 billion shortfall.

Postal rates went up last week by 2 cents to 44 cents for a first class stamp. That isn't expected to be enough to offset the likely losses. Regular increases are limited to the rate of inflation the year before and officials feared a larger, emergency increase would result in even more declines in mail volume.

The post office is seeking permission from Congress to reschedule some of its contributions to a retiree health care fund, which would reduce spending this year by $2 billion.

However, Potter stressed that the main problem is the weak economy and the post office is "anxiously awaiting a turnaround."

The post office was already working to cope with a decline in first-class mail as people turned to the Internet for personal communications as well as many financial transactions as the economic downtown caused advertisers to scale back, further cutting the mail stream.

The agency is expected to handle about 170 billion items this year, well below the peak of more than 210 billion, Potter said at a briefing at the Postal Forum, a convention for the mailing industry.

Potter has also suggested to Congress the possibility that it may be necessary to reduce mail delivery from six days a week to five. However, on Monday he sought to deflect attention from that possibility.

"People should take it for granted that they're going to get mail six days a week" until they hear otherwise, he said.

"They'll hear from us if we should ever change the frequency of delivery," Potter said.

More than 10,000 city carrier routes have been eliminated over the last several years as postal officials determined they could combine routes because of the reduction in mail volume and the increasing share that is sorted in advance by mailers.

Each route that is eliminated saves the agency about $100,000, and also may mean no longer needing a vehicle, Potter said. He said the post office is working with the workers unions on the changes, which also include a hiring freeze and an early retirement offer.

The mission to spur congressional action marks a new phase for The Climate Project, Gore said in an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday.

"We have to seize this moment, because it may not ever come around again," Gore said. "This is the time when the world is making up its mind."

The nonprofit group founded by Gore has trained about 3,000 people to deliver their own versions of the climate change slideshow that made him the star of the Oscar-winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" and the leading U.S. voice on global warming.

At a conference this weekend in Nashville, Gore is urging the volunteers to sell voters on a "cap and trade" system, setting a ceiling on greenhouse gas emissions, to counter the influence of industry lobbyists on members of Congress.

WASHINGTON -- Business groups and environmentalists are flooding the airwaves with ads targeting a dozen or so Democrats whose votes are seen as crucial on a controversial climate bill.

The outreach is intensifying as House Democratic leaders are gaining confidence they have the votes needed to move the bill through the House Energy and Commerce Committee as early as next week. On Thursday, a key swing vote on the panel, Rep. Rick Boucher (D., Va.), announced he would support the measure, though he said he continues to harbor concerns about some of its provisions and intends to seek changes when it comes before the full House later this year.

It remains unclear how many Democrats will vote for the bill, which aims to cut U.S. carbon-dioxide emissions roughly 80% below 2005 levels by 2050.

Bowing to Democrats whose states depend on cheap, coal-fired electricity or on energy-intensive industries, the committee's chairman, Rep. Henry Waxman (D., Calif.), agreed earlier this week to soften the proposal. It would require a cut of 17% below 2005 levels by 2020, rather than 20% by 2020 as originally proposed.

WASHINGTON -- House Democrats on Tuesday stopped a Republican plan to force a campaign finance inquiry that likely would have investigated several influential Democrats. It was the eighth time since late February that the Republican move was halted.

One of the biggest recipients has been the chairman of the defense appropriations subcommittee, Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania.

The vote was 215-182 to stop consideration of a GOP resolution to initiate a House ethics committee inquiry. It called for an investigation into campaign contributions to House lawmakers by recipients of pet project money and their lobbyists.

Democratic leaders spoke to some of their newer members privately last month, to stop them from voting for the Republican initiative. Tuesday's vote showed they made little headway.

Twenty-nine Democrats voted with the Republicans on Tuesday in an unsuccessful effort to keep the GOP initiative alive and allow the investigation to begin. The first time the resolution was considered, in late February, 17 Democrats supported it.

The ethics committee doesn't need a House resolution to start an investigation. The committee usually operates in secret in the early stages, so it could be looking at the donations. However, some of the members who could face an investigation have said they have not been contacted.

The Republican resolution focused on a lobbying firm, PMA, which was raided by the FBI last year. The company's political action committee records were carted off, along with files of some of its lobbyists.

In 2007 and 2008, Murtha, Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va. and Rep. Peter Visclosky. D-Ind., directed $137 million to defense contractors who were paying PMA to get them government business.

At the same time, the three lawmakers received huge amounts of political donations from PMA lobbyists and their clients. Murtha has collected $2.37 million from PMA's lobbyists and the companies it has represented since 1989, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks political money. Visclosky has collected $1.36 million; Moran, $997,348.

Visclosky heads the appropriations subcommittee on energy and water development. Moran is on Murtha's defense subcommittee.

But there is one thing today that ties all of these things together. One thing that is universally true: government programs make you feel good, but they only make things worse. Let me give you a recent example that will make blood shoot out of your eyes.

In Minnesota, there's a recent state law that requires a two percent mix of biodiesel in diesel fuel. They say this will all help save the planet — which makes people feel really good — and that is so easy and effective, they'll gradually raise the minimum biofuel to 20 percent.

Sounds great, right? I mean, who doesn't love those trees?

Let's look at reality. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that on Friday, the Bloomington School District had to cancel all their classes because some of their buses couldn't start. Why couldn't the buses start? Because apparently this biodiesel blend turns into a gel when it gets too cold. Hello! It's Minnesota in January!

Even worse, school nurses had to treat some kids for hypothermia after they hung out at bus stops for hours in negative 20 degree weather, or because they were on buses that stalled and of course the heaters don't work without running engines, which they can't do because the darn engines won't run on gel. Then the geniuses decide that the way to overcome this is to let the buses idle all night. Perfect, since they're trying to save the environment.

Do people care about making good decisions anymore or are we just making stuff up that makes us feel all warm and cuddly inside?

Lawmakers put children's safety at stake because they don't want their buses to run on a politically incorrect kind of fuel.

This is exactly like President Obama's order to close Gitmo without any real plan for what to do with the prisoners. Sure it makes us feel warm and cozy inside, but did anyone actually think this through?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday announced a $63 billion, six-year health initiative to help people in the world's poorest countries, most of it to bolster existing programs.

"We cannot simply confront individual preventable illnesses in isolation. The world is interconnected, and that demands an integrated approach to global health," Obama said in a statement.

Obama will request the money in his budget for the 2010 fiscal year that begins on October 1. The White House has already released the main elements of that budget, but plans to offer greater details on Thursday.

The money will go toward efforts to fight AIDS, tropical diseases and other illness and to help improve maternal health. The initiative will be aimed at addressing "some of the biggest global health challenges," said Deputy Secretary of State Jack Lew.

The program to combat AIDS and malaria which is known as the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, and was created in the Bush administration, would get $51 billion over the six years.

The other $12 billion would be channeled to new programs to fight tropical disease and other health problems.

A key part of President Obama's energy plan -- replacing fossil fuels with green alternatives -- is facing increasing opposition from an unlikely source: environmentalists.

Some environmentalists, who have successfully fought a wind farm on the border of Oregon and Washington, are trying to block a massive solar plant in the Mojave desert. And now an Oregon county is considering a ban on wind power in the foothills of the blue mountains.

"We all want to be as green as we can be. But at what cost?" Richard Jolly of the Blue Mountain Alliance. "To take everything from us? This valley could be surrounded by them."

Jolly says 400-foot wind turbines are a bird-killing eyesore. The developer argues the danger to birds is exaggerated but admits every big energy project has its downside.

"If we hold out for the perfect environmental silver bullet, if you will, it will always be 15 years down the road," he said. "We have to make incremental progress."

For decades, environmental groups have talked about "big oil," painting the petroleum industry as greedy and destructive. Now similar language is being applied to renewables. Instead of eco-friendly green power, increasingly it's "big wind" and "big solar."

Large environmental groups, such as the Natural Resources Defense Council, bristle at the idea of dissension in the ranks.

"We are working very aggressively to make a planning process happen with utilities, with industry, with local groups all at the table," said Rick Duke, director of the Natural Resources Defense Council's Center for Market Innovation.

Obama has set a goal of getting 25 percent of the nation's power from renewable sources by 2025. The White House contends that will create millions of jobs and has the support of business and environmental leaders.

But many local activists say we need to slow this rush to renewables or risk trading one power problem for another.

Social Security recipient has it deducted from his pay check and then receives it when disabled or retires, but the government also pays it to people who have never payed a dime into it, a good example Judges and our Government officials.

There was a judge in Texas that was bragging that when he retired he got full social security and has never payed one dime into it, if you did some checking you would find out that they pay it to any one that comes to this country if they stay for a few years, and their pork projects, and world charities.

The president and any one in DC cost tax payers, every time they start up their planes, just to do that New York fly over, cost tax payers about $300,000 thousand dollars or more but all any body complained about is social security.

For social security I have been paying into it sense I was 15, I am now 65 and I don't have any other income, so what do you want, every one who has lost their retirement through companies that filed bankruptcy or just closed their doors for lack of business, and you can't for get the ones who have lost their retirement because of the fall of wall street, or companies like Enron. then you are pretty stupid.

If you can’t tell by now that, PRIVATE or WALL STREET plans are not a good idea then you are so brainwashed you will never see it.

WASHINGTON -- President Obama turned the page on 100 days in office with an iffy boast about job creation and claims of fiscal prudence that are hard to square with his spending.

Obama spoke with abundant confidence about his chances for achieving the big-ticket items on his agenda despite economic calamity:

-- His assertion that his proposed budget "will cut the deficit in half by the end of my first term" is an eyeball-roller for many economists, given the uncharted terrain of trillion-dollar deficits the government is negotiating.

-- He promised vast savings from increased spending on preventive health care in the face of doubts that such an effort, however laudable it might be for public welfare, can pay for itself, let alone yield huge savings.

-- He pitched a remedy for Social Security's long-term crisis that analysts say won't fix half the problem.

Obama held a prime-time news conference Wednesday and addressed citizens at an Arnold, Mo., high school, using both events to review progress at the 100-day mark and look ahead.

A look at some of his claims:

OBAMA: "We began by passing a Recovery Act that has already saved or created over 150,000 jobs." -- from news conference.

THE FACTS: This assertion is dubious on several levels. For starters, the U.S. has lost more than 1.2 million jobs since Obama took office, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Even if Obama's stimulus bill saved or created as many jobs as he says, that number is dwarfed by the number of recent job losses.

But Obama's number is murky, at best. The White House has not yet announced how it intends to count jobs created by the stimulus bill. Obama's number is based on a job-counting formula that his economists have developed but have not made public. Until that formula is announced --probably in the coming week or so -- there's no way to assess its accuracy.

Whatever the formula, economists who study job creation say it will require some creative math. That's because Obama has lumped "jobs saved" in with "jobs created." Even economists for organizations that stand to benefit from the stimulus concede it probably is impossible to estimate saved jobs because that would require calculating a hypothetical: how many people would have lost their jobs without the stimulus.

THE FACTS: While the budget does set a roadmap for achieving the president's goals, it says nothing about how to pay for his health plan, expected to cost more than $1 trillion over the next 10 years. And while the deficit, under the plan, would drop to $523 billion in 2014, it achieves it with unrealistic assumptions, such as projections that spending in Iraq and Afghanistan will amount to only $50 billion a year.

Congress, under Democratic control in 2007 and 2008, held the purse strings that led to the deficit Obama inherited. A Republican president, George W. Bush, had a role too: He signed the legislation.

Obama supported the emergency financial bailout package in Bush's final months -- a package Democratic leaders wanted to make bigger.

To be sure, Obama opposed the Iraq war, a drain on federal coffers for six years before he became president. But with one major exception, he voted in support of Iraq war spending.

The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget has estimated Obama's policy proposals would add a net $428 billion to the deficit over four years, even accounting for his spending reduction goals. Now, the deficit is nearly quadrupling to $1.75 trillion.

OBAMA: "I think one basic principle that we know is that the more we do on the (disease) prevention side, the more we can obtain serious savings down the road. ... If we're making those investments, we will save huge amounts of money in the long term." -- in Missouri.

THE FACTS: It sounds believable that preventing illness should be cheaper than treating it, and indeed that's the case with steps like preventing smoking and improving diet and exercise. But during the 2008 campaign, when Obama and other presidential candidates were touting a focus on preventive care, the New England Journal of Medicine cautioned that "sweeping statements about the cost-saving potential of prevention, however, are overreaching." It said that "although some preventive measures do save money, the vast majority reviewed in the health economics literature do not."

And a study released in December by the Congressional Budget Office found that increasing preventive care "could improve people's health but would probably generate either modest reductions in the overall costs of health care or increases in such spending within a 10-year budgetary time frame."

OBAMA: "You could cut (Social Security) benefits. You could raise the tax on everybody so everybody's payroll tax goes up a little bit. Or you can do what I think is probably the best solution, which is you can raise the cap on the payroll tax." -- in Missouri.

THE FACTS: Obama's proposal would reduce the Social Security trust fund's deficit by less than half, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

That means he would still have to cut benefits, raise the payroll tax rate, raise the retirement age or some combination of these measures to deal with the program's long-term imbalance.

Workers currently pay 6.2 percent and their employers pay an equal rate -- for a total of 12.4 percent -- on annual wages of up to $106,800, after which no more payroll tax is collected.

Obama wants workers making more than $250,000 to pay payroll tax on their income over that amount. That would still protect workers making under $250,000 from an additional burden. But it would raise much less money than removing the cap completely.

TOKYO – International donors, led by the United States and Japan, pledged more than $5 billion Friday to stabilize Pakistan's troubled economy and fight the spread of terrorism in the Islamic nation and neighboring Afghanistan.
The U.S. and Japan started off the one-day conference by pledging $1 billion each. Saudi Arabia added $700 million and the EU $640 million. The total pledged was $5.28 billion, according to Pakistan's foreign minister.

Did you know that there are literally hundreds of thousands of commercial establishments licensed to sell and serve alcoholic beverages in the United States?

There is a very real legal risk that the owners of these business establishments assume every day with respect to the sale of alcohol. If one of their customers drinks a sufficient quantity of alcohol until they are legally intoxicated, drives an automobile while in this drunken condition, and injures or kills someone in an accident, the owner of the bar where the alcohol was last consumed can be held liable for damages.

Whether or not you believe this is fair is irrelevant. It is the law in many states. Unfortunately, this law is in direct conflict with the owners' (and bartenders') incentive to sell alcoholic beverages to make money.

Because the potential liability is so high, many bar owners simply shrug their shoulders and ignore the situation. They have to earn a living. Many of the owners reason that if it ever does happen, they'll simply hand over the keys to their establishment and find some other way to make a living.

What happens to the family if the bread winner loses their income who is going to help them. I think the person who sells and hands out these licences should be held responsible, not just the one who sold the alcoholic beverage.

A person's blood alcohol content is influenced by several variables including their body weight, the amount and kind of food they've eaten, the percentage of alcohol in the drinks they've had, the amount of time they've been drinking, the number of drinks they've consumed, and the amount of time since their last drink. That should not matter, no alcohol should be consumed when driving, take a truck driver, if they use a mouth wash they will get a fine or lose their job. A mouth wash will give you a .04 and a ticket, even though it is only in your mouth not your system.

Passenger lands plane in Fla. after pilot dies

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A passenger landed a twin-engine plane in Florida after the pilot died in flight with a total of six people on board.

Federal Aviation Administration officials say the pilot died after takeoff from an airport in Naples on Sunday. It was on autopilot and climbing toward 10,000 feet when the pilot died.

The passenger who took over is licensed for single-engine planes but isn't certified to fly the larger King Air craft.

An air traffic controller helped the passenger down by calling a friend in Connecticut who knows the King Air plane and relaying instructions. The plane landed safely at Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers.

The plane had been headed to Jackson, Miss. The names of the pilot and passengers have not been released.

It is probably no surprise to many that "The Honorable" Sen John "Jay" Rockefeller IV, of West Virginia has proposed to give additional state powers to the executive branch of the government to regulate, control, and shut down the internet under the auspices of cybersecurity.

Of course this type of empowerment of the executive branch is not a just action of our legistlative body. Giving executive authority to violate free speech and interfere in private communications is just plain enablement. I have been making my limited attempts to block and tackle this in committee.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – A cell phone used by a Wyoming 13-year-old to run up a nearly $5,000 phone bill will text no more thanks to her angry father and his hammer. Dena Christoffersen of Cheyenne sent or received about 20,000 text messages over about a month, and her parents' phone plan didn't cover texting.

Gregg Christoffersen told KUSA-TV of Denver this week that he thought texting had been disabled on her daughter's phone, which he smashed hours after getting a phone bill for more than $4,750.

The family said Verizon has been willing to knock the bill down to a reasonable level.

Dena has been grounded until the end of school. She said she feels bad and has learned her lesson.

WASHINGTON — The president's new science adviser said Wednesday that global warming is so dire, the Obama administration is discussing radical technologies to cool Earth's air.

John Holdren told The Associated Press in his first interview since being confirmed last month that the idea of geoengineering the climate is being discussed.

One such extreme option includes shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun's rays. Holdren said such an experimental measure would only be used as a last resort.

"It's got to be looked at," he said. "We don't have the luxury of taking any approach off the table."

Holdren outlined several "tipping points" involving global warming that could be fast approaching.

Once such milestones are reached, such as complete loss of summer sea ice in the Arctic, it increases chances of "really intolerable consequences," he said.

Twice in a half-hour interview, Holdren compared global warming to being "in a car with bad brakes driving toward a cliff in the fog."

At first, Holdren characterized the potential need to technologically tinker with the climate as just his personal view. However, he went on to say he has raised it in administration discussions.

Holdren, a 65-year-old physicist, is far from alone in taking geoengineering more seriously.

The National Academy of Science is making climate tinkering the subject of its first workshop in its new multidiscipline climate challenges program.

The British parliament has also discussed the idea.

The American Meteorological Society is crafting a policy statement on geoengineering that says "it is prudent to consider geoengineering's potential, to understand its limits and to avoid rash deployment."

Last week, Princeton scientist Robert Socolow told the National Academy that geoengineering should be an available option in case climate worsens dramatically.

But Holdren noted that shooting particles into the air — making an artificial volcano as one Nobel laureate has suggested — could have grave side effects and would not completely solve all the problems from soaring greenhouse gas emissions.

So such actions could not be taken lightly, he said.

Still, "we might get desperate enough to want to use it," he added.

Another geoengineering option he mentioned was the use of so-called artificial trees to suck carbon dioxide — the chief human-caused greenhouse gas — out of the air and store it.

At first that seemed prohibitively expensive, but a re-examination of the approach shows it might be less costly, he said.

MIAMI – Authorities say they've charged the first U.S. citizen with hiding assets from tax collectors in the Swiss bank UBS.

The U.S Attorney's Office says 55-year-old Steven Michael Rubinstein of Boca Raton, Fla. was charged Thursday with filing a false tax return.

Authorities say that the yacht company accountant deposited more than $2 million in Kruggerrand gold coins into his UBS accounts and bought securities worth more than 4.5 million Swiss Francs through the accounts.

The Obama administration wants UBS to turn over information on thousands of U.S. customers who concealed their accounts from the government in violation of tax laws. UBS has formally accepted responsibility for helping Americans hide assets and agreed to pay $780 million in fines and restitution.
